Jurong is a prominent region located
in the southwestern part of Singapore, known for its significant industrial and
economic contributions to the country. It encompasses the planning areas of
Jurong East, Jurong West, Boon Lay, and Pioneer, as well as Jurong Island and
parts of the Western Water Catchment. Historically, the region can also include
Bukit Batok and Tuas.
Jurong
includes several offshore islands, such as Pulau Damar Laut and Pulau Samulun,
in addition to the major industrial hub, Jurong Island. The mainland coastline
faces the Strait of Selat Jurong, while Jurong Island faces the Strait of Selat
Pandan.
Developed
and industrialized in the late 1960s to address the economic needs of
post-independence Singapore, Jurong remains vital to the nation's growth across
commercial, industrial, and residential sectors. It has become one of the most
densely populated industrial areas in Singapore. More recently, Jurong has been
envisioned as Singapore's second central business district (CBD) through the
ambitious Jurong Lake District project, aimed at further boosting its economic
and developmental profile.
